I am considering a country trek around Italy to sample the peasant wine and food flavors...a la Mario Batali...anyone had any experience with this?

Hey guy, What's up? In 1997 I went to Germany and then took a tour of Italy. I few of the places I visited...Pisa, Pompei, Florance, Sorrento, Venice, Naples, Capri. Italy is one of the nicest places to tour. Lots to see and do, food is great...everywhere. Wine...well....you will not want to leave. If you go take lots of pictures...we want to see them! Have fun....Rod

depends on the wine your going after. i lived in florence for 3 months last year and traveled all over the northern section of the boot.
for red wines you cant get better then tuscany. go to a little town about half hour south of florence called monte pulciano. there they have some incredible wines, the town specialty is a not so well known gold medal winner called the "something nobel". i forgot the name but i know it has nobel in it and they will know what your talking about if you go there.
white wines in the northern section are a bit harder to find, but some are still very good. try a little town, also south of florence, about 15 minutes, called san giminiano. they have a really good white wine there, also forgot the name.
for the best sparkeling wine (champagne not grown in the champagne region) go to venice. there they harvest a certain type of grape and make a special sparkeling wine out of it that is incredible! its called prosseco. venice is a bit hard to navigate but the beauty makes it well worth the hassle. find your way to one of the less touristy areas on the main isle and there you will easily find a wine store with some of the best prosseco i have ever had for 8 euros a bottle. a deal not to be missed.

for food go to desenzano! this is a must! small town at the southern tip of the garda sea in the northern most part of italy. this is by far the best food i had during my entire trip. theres a small restarante called "il cucina del vechio" (translates to the old kitchen) if you can find it your in heaven. i had the butternut squash ravioli in a sweet butter sauce with fried sage as a garnish. absolutely incredible.

that should be enough info for you, let me know if you want to know more.

    good luck.

correction: the resturaunt in desenzano is called "cucina del oro" (kitchen of the hour) not "il cucina del vechio" (the old kitchen). sorry, i got it switched. il cucina del vechio is the resturant i went to in rome. if your in rome i recommend going there, some of the best food in town.

        just a note:
In Italian, oro means 'gold', not 'hour'.
(ora = hour, ore = hours)

So it's the Kitchen of Gold! That ravioli sounds delectable. Any (Italian) food in Italy sounds delectable right now. So hard for me to enjoy most "Italian" food here in California after having been to Italy. It's also hard for me to stomach any Chinese food in the US after trying Italian versions several times ==> nausea!

            thanks for the great input

i ended up going to Torino and then on to Asti and Venezia...

my new favorite food is Insalata Brasaola con Rucula and Pecorino..wow! amazing flavor

i ended up smuggling 15 bottles of wine home..most italian

we met a very friendly hotel desk clerk who took us out on the town and showed us the best wine shops and restaurants...what a blast!
