OK, in the mountains of Yunnan, southeat China, I ate deep fried bamboo grubs. The locals thought it was a delicacy, I thought it was rather like popcorn.

What about you guys?

Caribbean food ideas?

Hi,
I just returned from a trip to the Caribbean and fell in love with their food. Would love to do some cooking but not sure where I can find the ingredients in Seattle. Someone recommended that I find a West Indies market.

Does anyone know of a market like this (preferably close to Fremont as possible) or a bigger grocery that might carry their foods? Or a restaurant would also suffice. My favorites were: plantains, veggie cheeks (or chunks), and their meat rubs were amazing!

restaurant recommendations near Humboldt Redwoods State Park

Not sure if this is the best place to post this, but it's the first place that came to mind and I couldn't figure out where else.

We've decided to head north from SF along the coast for Thanksgiving weekend this year and are looking for any recommendations for nice restaurants (specifically one likely to be open on Thanksgiving and take reservations) somewhere in the rough vicinity of Humboldt Redwoods State Park, if anyone has any advice.

So I live in America, and I am SO BORED WITH eggs and toast!

I would love some recipes for breakfast from other places. What to they eat in Istanbul? What's boiling on the stove in Madagascar? How about Burma? What do people in Japan have with their tea, or do they drink coffee?

This includes <but is not limited to> variations on muselix, chai, coffee, dal, or rice porridge(konji) and whatever else you may have. Baked goods recipes are fine too.

Any anecdotes/stories you have would also be appreciated to accompany the recipe(the first time you had it, etc...) and enhance its 'flavor'.

Much appreciated.

Venice ideas?

I'm off to Venice for a few days next week and hope to eat very welland often the entire time. When we went last time, we enjoyed the local seafood, snacking on a huge variety of cichetti. the calves liver with polenta , almost always accompanied with gorgeous red wine and the lucious though indeed pricey coffee and hot chocolate drinks in San Marco Piazza. Are there other 'must try 'treats we should seek out this time. Does anyone have any particular places they have enjoyed? Last time , we opted against going to Harry's bar- did we miss out? Any ideas are appreciated!

Moroccan Mint Tea

Gotta give some love to the "Moroccan whiskey," as they so fondly refer to it... they drank this stuff constantly in every town I visited. I stayed with a family for a while, and here's how they prepared it: boil a pot of water. Turn off fire and add a couple of tea bags (they used a certain French brand, but any brown, English-style tea should do), let steep for about 3 minutes. Add a large bundle of fresh mint to the pot, let steep for an additional 2-3 minutes. Add LOTS of sugar, enough so that you really notice the sweetness when you taste with the spoon, and stir. Serve from bent-necked teapot by splashing from height of 3+ feet (so that you get a froth on top) into a glass that is not unlike a tall shot glass. May require practice. Enjoy! Brush teeth afterwards :)

some traditional Japanese inns in the mountains offer meat of various animals, like wild bear (i think it's black bear), wild boar, wild deer, domesticated horse and maybe something else. how do you all feel about that?

would you feel comfortable, not in terms of whether you can eat or not, but in more ethical sense? just curious to know what your take on this.
